Weekend Western Loppet Roundup

Results from Snow Mountain Stampede, Yellowstone Rendezvous, and The Great Ski Race.

This past weekend saw 3 important loppets take place around the western U.S., The Snow Mountain Stampede in Winter Park, CO, The Yellowstone Rendezvous in West Yellowstone, MT and The Great Ski Race in Tahoe, CA. Due to this scheduling conflict, the top level of racing was diluted but it was still fast and exciting at all 3 events.

The 42km classic Snow Mountain Stampede was won by Denver University skier Harald Lovenskiold with teammate Mike Hinkley right behind in 2nd. Joshua Smith rounded out the top 3 with Nathan Schultz in 4th. In the women’s race, Subaru’s Jana Rehemaa beat out former CU standout Maria Wik with Stephanie Wunderle in 3rd. The Great Ski Race in Tahoe was a notably Rossignol affair as teammates Mark Iverson and Josh Smullin outgunned Team Subaru’s Pat Weaver, 2nd in the Birkie the week before. All three finished in the same time of 1:13.20. Beth Reid won the women’s division finishing in 12th overall. Following Reid was Team Alpina/XC Oregon skier Evelyn Dong with Subaru’s Abby Larson in 3rd.

Of special note is Beth Reid’s victory over some of the United States’ best female racers at this time; Larson represented the U.S. in Torino while Dong won the Boulder Mountain Tour earlier in February. Although many may not recognize the name Beth Reid, she used to go by the name Beth Heiden, one of America’s most noteworthy female athletes in history. Reid is the only woman to have won a World Championship in speed skating as well as a World Championship in road cycling. Reid was also NCAA cross-country skiing champion for the University of Vermont after she retired from speed skating. For complete results of The Great Ski Race:

The Yellowstone Rendezvous, traditionally held the 2nd week in March, was moved forward a week on the schedule to avoid conflict with other local events. Unfortunately, this led to a conflict with other national events, but the race went off great anyway. Ian Harvey of Toko out sprinted three others to win the 50k Rendezvous race in a time of 2:20.56. Following Harvey to the line was Subaru’s Justin Easter, Barry Makarewicz and Paul Clark, all within 15 seconds of the winner. In the women’s 50k, Subaru scored their 2nd big win of the weekend with Kate Underwood in a time of 2:35.14, who out sprinted Nikki Kimball for the victory. Subaru’s Kristina Strandberg came in 3rd.
