FasterSkierMay 10, 2008

The Mt. Mansfield Winter Academy (MMWA) located in Stowe, VT is seeking an experienced coach for its first year Nordic program. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit to be part of a start-up academy Nordic program.

The MMWA, founded in 1992, will apply the same philosophy, principles, governance and infrastructure to its Nordic program that have contributed to the success of its alpine and snowboard programs where participants have graduated to college and national level programs. The MMWA is an independent private (non-profit) boarding school approved by the Vermont Board of Education, and dedicated to providing individually designed experience that allows students in grade 8-PG to pursue both academic and athletic excellence.

The MMWA is a five month program (Nov-March) offering participants an alternative to nine month ski academy programs. Students receive a concentrated level of coaching, training and race support to compete at the highest level while also being afforded the opportunity to live at home a greater portion of the year and to continue to play fall or spring sports for their sending high school.

Position Overview:
• Full-time Nov —March.
• Head coach for 6-8 MMWA athletes and potentially additional weekend or part-time skiers.
• Potential to oversee coaching for other local seasonal and summer ski clubs.
• Teaching and dorm parent positions available at the MMWA.
• Design and lead daily and year round training programs.
• Provide full race support at JOQs and other national and local competitions.
• Develop and lead fall and summer snow and dry land training camps.

• Enthusiasm and energy to motivate and challenge junior skiers to reach their full potential.
• Passion to contribute to a close knit community of students and teachers in developing student athletes within the academic and athletic standards set forth by the MMWA.
• Ability to effectively communicate technique and racing strategies and to apply video analysis and waxing skills.
• Ability to coordinate, balance and prioritize student and teacher schedules through the rigors of daily academic, training and race schedules.

Compensation:

Potential depends on the following options:

1.) Winter season only (Nov-March) coaching 6-8 MMWA athletes,
2.) Winter season only (Nov-March) coaching 6-8 MMWA athletes, plus teaching
at the MMWA and/or serving as live-in dorm parent,
3.) Any combination of the above, plus additional coaching options are available
for other local seasonal and year round ski clubs.
4.) Developing and lead summer and fall training camps.

Location:

Located in the heart of Stowe, VT, the MMWA is ideally located to take advantage of some of the best skiing and training venues in the east. The Trapp Family Lodge Touring Center will be the host site for training and its reputation for its extensive trail network and ability to host top races stands on its own. Last year Trapps added snowmaking capabilities to assure early and extended skiing. There are also a number of local ski and training venues for snow and dryland training including lighted ski and roller ski paths.
