FasterSkierJuly 23, 2008

Fairbanks Cross Country (FXC), the year-round junior training program of the Nordic Ski Club Fairbanks seeks an energetic coach to assist with a growing group of J3-OJ athletes. The job primarily consists of coaching at regular training sessions, but also includes assisting with ski service at races both in town and out, as well as helping with various other elements of running a successful ski program. The right candidate should have a college degree, coaching skills and experience, and ski racing experience at the collegiate level or equivalent.

Formed in 2006, FXC has taken advantage of Fairbanks’ great training environment and strong ski community to grow and develop. Last winter, 40 percent of the program’s 25 athletes qualified for their first Junior Olympics or Arctic Winter Games.

Among Fairbanks’ skiing assets are: 6 to 7 month ski season, excellent dry
land training, especially for activities on trails; Birch Hill Recreation Area, with approximately 28Km of trails, including about 11Km of lighted trails and the 10,000 square foot Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center Building; excellent in-season grooming and off-season trail maintenance and improvements; an outstanding race organization with a full schedule of club, regional and national events; a great feeder program – Fairbanks Junior Nordic – with over 250 elementary school skiers; a large and supportive club membership and skiing public; excellent coverage of the sport in local media; a comprehensive cross country infrastructure, both physical and organizational.

Pay for the assistant coach will be $1200-$1500 per month depending on experience, plus up to $1000 to cover moving expenses to Fairbanks. The initial contract period will be from October 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009 with the potential to expand the job into a part-time, year-round position in coming years. In addition, FXC is committed to finding the successful candidate a good place to live as well as a part-time job that is the best possible match in his or her area of interest. Further possibilities exist within the community for coaching duties with local high school programs and for taking university level classes at UAF.

Please submit letter of introduction and resume detailing skiing, coaching and leadership experience plus three references with phone numbers to Pete Leonard, FXC Head Coach and Program Director.
