Jackson, N.H. (Oct. 3) — The Jackson Ski Touring Foundation (JSTF) invites current and prospective junior skiers to learn more about Nordic training opportunities in the Mount Washington Valley. JSTF, in cooperation with the Mount Washington Valley Nordic Club and Great Glen Trails, offers an eight-session instructional program for middle and high school skiers (age 12 — 18) that includes pre-season training, classic and freestyle coaching and race tactics. Coaches Steve Vosburgh and Pete Brockett work with youngsters in 2.5 hour sessions on alternate Sundays from early November through mid-February.

“Junior Development offers the continuity, camaraderie and competitive synergy of a team, but without a huge time commitment, “explains Coach Steve Vosburgh. “This is a great way for skiers who are not part of a race academy to improve their skills by working with experienced coaches and fellow competitors.” Coach Vosburgh is an active master’s racer and will help Mount Washington Valley North Club team members at many events where young racers compete through the season.
Nordic-specific experience is not a pre-requisite; however participants should plan on strenuous workouts that make the most of each 2 ½ hour session.

“This is a terrific opportunity for high school runners as well as soccer, football, and field hockey players to pick up an outdoor winter activity through a program that combines traditional coaching with games and park tricks,” said Thom Perkins, adding, “The Junior Development Program includes recreational skiers as well as competitors who are recruited by NCAA Division I college teams.”

The good news for parents of x-c ski training participants is that it provides plenty of time for them to enjoy a time on the trails, and often parents learn new skills from their teens.

The Junior Development Program is offered on day-by-day basis at $25 per session, plus trail pass; alternatively, by registering for all eight sessions in advance, the young skier also receives a complimentary season pass that is valid at both Jackson Ski Touring Foundation and Great Glen Trails.

Registration information is available at www.JacksonXC.org. Teens and/or parents who would like to speak with a coach may send an email to info@JacksonXC.org.
