NYSEF XC Season Opener

Lake Placid, NY – The New York Ski Educational Foundation Nordic program hosted 87 racers at ORDA’s Mt. Van Hoevenberg Cross-Country ski venue on Sunday, December 14. Skiers were lucky to get a race in between the two warm spells in December’s weather.

Claiming the overall podium spots in both the Men’s and Women’s 10-kilometer freestyle event were members from the St. Lawrence University ski team. Steve Vargo (Shaftbury, VT), Zach Wetherall (Dalton, MA) and Eric Wolcott (Concord, NH) claimed the podium spots for the Men, while teammates Caroline Carpenter (Shelburne, VT), Kristen Bendar (Essex Junction, VT) and Libby Hayden (Bend, OR) swept the podium for the Women. NYSEF’s Elizabeth Izzo was the top local competitor in the women’s race finishing in fourth place.

The J2 boys (14-15 years old) race was led by NYSEF’s Charlie Bencze (Tupper Lake, NY), coming across the finish line in 14:18. His teammates Joey Izzo (Lake Placid, NY) and Nate Capone (Vermontville, NY) rounded out the top three in 14:49 and 16:07, respectively.

Maile Sapp (Morrisonville, NY) of NYSEF won the girls J2 (14-15 year olds) in a time of 18:22. Anna Izzo (Lake Placid, NY) finished in second in 21:11 and Becky Christoffel (Clifton Park, NY) in third in 22:26.

In the Bill Koch Kids race, Everett Sapp (NYSEF/Morrisonville, NY), Grace McGrew (NYSEF/Lake Placid, NY), Karl Schulz (NYSEF/Lake Placid, NY) and Tyra Wynn (Queensbury, NY) all took top honors their respective age groups.
