It was a sad day for cross country skiing in Canada a little more then a year ago when Heinz while coaching his skiers at the Canada Cup races at Duntrooon Ski Resort in Collingwood, ON. passed away while taking a short ski between events. One of the out comes of Heinz’s career and his dedication to his athletes and coaching was the establishment of the Heinz Neiderhauser Coaching Scholarship on his behalf which is to be awarded to a deserving coach in the Ontario Division each year.
This is a one year scholarship ranging from $500 to $1000 for a coach or coaches who are involved in a club program and who are pursuing the coach’s education program administered by CCC.
This year’s selected coach was Adam Kates, and had this to say about Heinz.
First off let me express the honor that I feel to be the recipient of this award. Like many people in Canadian skiing, Heinz was always one of my favorite people on the racing scene. He was a genuine and classy individual who will be sorely missed by an athletic community that he was an integral part in developing and nurturing. As a new coach I seek to emulate the fine balance that Heinz struck between having a firm hand for training and racing and soft heart in his interactions with and compassion for the people around him.
This scholarship program in honor of Heinz has now gone through it’s first year very successfully and we would like to keep it moving in this direction. We think Adam has been an outstanding recipient, the fund raising went well last year, but we need to continue raising the funds if we are going to build and educate coaches in the way Heinz would think worthy of building great skiers. We know that times are not the best for fund raising, but even the smallest donation ($25) will continue to build this fund and support the growth of coaching here in Ontario.
