This photo made it into the top 5 of every judge.

“A beautiful photo that captures the solitary nature of ski racing. ”

Second Place

“This is a stunning shot and from someone who was at the Torino Olympics this picture really captures what it was like to be at one of the races – the angle  and the composition gives the viewer a good sense of the intensity – How many racers there were, the crowd, etc. The light works to give the shot nice highlights and shadows. ”

Third Place

"Nothing left", March 2008 at the world masters in McCall, Idaho. by: Thomas McGoldrick
“Nothing left”, March 2008 at the world masters in McCall, Idaho. by: Thomas McGoldrick

This photo was the top pick of several of the judges and contains so much of the racing environment – the whole story as it were.

“This image tells a story.  The two skiers collapsed at the finish line.  More skiers coming in behind them.  The woman running to assist, and the man pointing, straight at the camera.  The upper frame is taken up by a full crowd.   This image makes me want to know more – Who actually won the race?  The composition works nicely with the closest racer off center and the skiers in the background in the middle of the frame anchoring the photo.”

Another consistent favorite for all judges.

“This photo captures the ultimate moment of a race – the finish – and what a finish this was.  Great action, great expressions.”
