Boise, ID. Charlie Fereday and Keelin Ryan won the final heats of the Alpenfest Classic Roller Ski Sprint hosted by the Bogus Basin Nordic Team Oct. 10, 2009.
Over a 1 km course, Fereday, age 17, went head to head with expert master skier & Idaho Nordic hot shot Joe Jensen, 36, in a mixed six person Mens Junior-Senior final. Fereday, in his ninth year on the Bogus Basin Nordic Team, pulled away slightly on the crowd-pleasing lollipop turn and crossed the finish 10 meters ahead of Jensen.
In the Womens Junior final, Keelin Ryan, also a J1 Bogus Basin Nordic Team veteran, doubled poled to first place followed by J2 superstar Margaret Pope, a McCall native now skiing with the Bogus team.
The men’s final also featured Bogus Basin Nordic Team’s departing Program Director/Head Coach Scott Johnstone, who leaves this week to become the Assistant Coach of Canada’s National Nordic Combined Team. Working the racecourse was BBNT’s incoming Program Director and Head Coach Patrick Harper. An Idaho native, Harper has an extensive national nordic and outdoor sports background and most recently was the Nordic Director at Jug Mountain Ranch in Donnelley, Idaho.
The double pole battles took place against sparkling fall colors on a chilly afternoon during a day-long Octoberfest, the inaugural “Alpenfest,” in Boise’s Ann Morrison Park. Skier ranks were down from forecasted entries due to flu and colds hammering expected competitors from Sun Valley and Burke Mountain Academy.
Thanks to the hardy volunteers who made the event possible and to College of Idaho for electronic timing equipment.
