With less than two weeks to go, skiers everywhere are getting ready for the 2011 Tour of Anchorage. On Sunday March 6, thousands of skiers will participate in the largest ski race in Alaska, and what many claim is the second largest ski race in North America. Many elite athletes consider the Tour to be the pinnacle of their season’s training and you can expect to find nearly all the big name Alaska skiers participating—just don’t blink if you expect to catch a glimpse of them. Fear not, mere mortals, there are race waves for all.
New this year, race organizers have moved the 25km start to the Alaska Pacific University trail system to prevent congestion on the trail where the 50km, 40km and 25km courses merge. The 40km and 50km starts will still be at Service High School at the foot of the Chugach Mountains, but there will be a slight change of course through the APU trail system.
After you finish, join your friends for free pizza and refreshments at Kincaid Chalet. Rest up for Monday night’s awards banquet at the Beartooth Theatre Pub in midtown Anchorage. There will be food, beer, a band, a slide show and, of course, lots of awards—a great way to celebrate all the effort put in during the race. When was the last time you ski’d at sea level or below?
