Not everyone in Boston is cursing the uncharacteristically snowy winter. Veterans in the area who have joined New England Nordic Ski Association’s (NENSA) fledgling Adaptive Program have put all that snow to good use. NENSA kicked off its first season of Adaptive Programming this week at the Weston Ski Track, just 15 miles outside of the city.
Supported by a grant from USA Paralympics, the new program seeks to expand adaptive Nordic opportunities throughout New England. Two weekly programs in Weston will run through the winter and serve disabled veterans and others with physical disabilities. In addition, NENSA will coordinate with well-established adaptive sports organizations to support adaptive Nordic offerings and work with ski clubs and communities to initiate programs. The program’s mobile trailer is stocked with sit skis and stand-up ski equipment to support programs, clubs and events throughout New England.
“New England has such a rich skiing culture,” says NENSA’S Adaptive Program Director Eileen Carey, “We want to build upon that and increase accessibility of the sport so that people throughout the region have access to adaptive equipment, instruction and programming. “
