Canucks Strong in Pursuit, But Still Seeking Hardware in Oslo

Two-thirds of the way through Sunday’s World Championships pursuit, Alex Harvey was taking a page out of Johan Olsson’s book. Harvey, the 22-year-old Canadian, had launched a surprise, solo attack reminiscent of the move made by Olsson, a Swede, in the same race at the Vancouver Olympics last year. The Swedes took two medals in that event, with Olsson getting bronze. And for a while, it looked like the Canadians were on their way to...

After racing the Birkie in Wisconsin yesterday, I hitched a ride to Minneapolis and flew to Europe. It was a pretty crazy move, one that I am temporarily regretting because my legs really seized up in the car and then on the plane, and I am currently unsure whether I will ever be able to [...]

Madshus skiers won both the men’s skate and classic races at the 2011 American Birkebeiner!!! Congratulations to Madshus’ Tore Martin Gundersen of Norway who won the skate race in 1:59:57 and Juergen Uhl of Vermont who repeated his 2010 victory in 2:28:47, just 8.4 seconds off his winning time from last year!  What an amazing performance, we are so proud to have such talented athletes represent us.

Gundersen, Compton Win the Birkebeiner; Uhl, Bender are tops at Classic Birkie

The 38th annual American Birkebeiner, held in sub-zero and single-digit temperatures with record particpation, saw two sprint finishes to crown the men’s and women’s Birkie freestyle champions and a pair of UVM alums ski to sizable victories in the Birkie Classic on Saturday. Norwegian Tore Martin Gundersen won the 50K Birkie Freestyle race with a time of 2:00:32.8, furiously outsprinting his nearest opponent, Benoit Chauvet of France, by less than a second.  Twenty seconds later,...

EISA: Caitlin Patterson, Eric Packer take skate victories on first day of Regionals

The winners surprised no one in today’s 5 and 10k individual start skate race.  Both wearing the leader’s jerseys, UVM’s Caitlin Patterson and Dartmouth’s Eric Packer again stole the show on the first day of the EISA Regional Carnival at Bates. A half foot of fresh wet snow fell yesterday in Rumford, Maine, but overnight winds churned the pack into a fine, soft powder.  The course crew at Black Mountain re-groomed in the early hours,...

Frenzel Flies Unchallenged to NoCo Gold

The German cross-country team is off to an inauspicious start at the 2011 World Championships, but their Nordic Combined brethren are doing their best to make up for it. Twenty-two-year-old Eric Frenzel (GER) rode a stellar jump to a convincing victory in the men’s Normal Hill Gundersen 10km event in Oslo, Norway on Saturday afternoon. The 26,000 fans may not have been able to see much through the dense fog, but even if they had,...

JGreggFebruary 26, 2011

It was a tight finish for the guys freestyle, CXC Bryan Cook  was the 1st American, 5th overall.  CXC also had the other top U. S. finishes with Brian Gregg  2nd American, 8th overall and Matt Liebsch just a hair off .    Result times shown are confusing due to ‘starting gun time’ for the first 6 finishers and ‘chip time’ for all others.    complete results Video of [...]

Once again we have some potentially misleading FIS points, as Bjørgen, Kowalczyk and Johaug skied away from the field a bit. I’ll have a closer look at the results that adjust for this on Monday. It was mostly the usual suspects at the top, but what a race for Maria Rydqvist, though! Three in Top-30 Again for US Women

The US women continued a solid start to the 2011 World Championships, placing three skiers in the top-30 for the second consecutive race in the women’s 15km pursuit. With an almost impenetrable fog blanketing the Holmenkollen ski stadium, spectators traded ears for eyes – the roar of the crowd alerting those just 100 meters down the track that the racers were coming. The pea soup certainly did not slow race winner Marit Bjoergen (NOR), who...

Through the Fog, Bjoergen Emerges With Second Gold in Oslo

The fog in Oslo was so thick that the fans at Holmenkollen could barely see any of the women’s 15 k pursuit. The video board across from the stands was completely obscured, and even when athletes skied through the stadium, the only forms that could be made out were outlines—the spindly one of Justyna Kowalczyk (POL), say, or the stocky one of Finland’s Aino-Kaisa Saarinen. But with the homestretch lying directly alongside the bleachers, the...

My sister Kari dances with the statues in Oslo's Vigeland Park. The park takes its name from Gustav Vigeland, who put in a couple decades making the 180 statues that fill the place. Interestingly, all the creations are naked, save for Gustav's image of...
