FasterSkier Seeks Associate Editor, Canadian Editor, and Reporter

FasterSkierApril 14, 2011

FasterSkier is looking to fill several positions for the coming year.

Associate Editor

The Associate Editor is a full time position at FasterSkier.

The Associate Editor will work closely with the FasterSkier Editor to manage overall editorial content of the site, and will be responsible for overseeing one or more additional employees.

Journalistic duties include regular reporting on news in the cross-country community, identification of newsworthy topics, and authoring of regular features.

The Associate Editor will work with multiple forms of media, including the creation of regular podcasts and videos, and will assist in the publication of the Start List, FasterSkier’s semi-regular email newsletter.

Management work includes oversight of an intern and a reporter—giving guidance on topic choice, interview subjects, and issues of journalistic style, as well as providing feedback and editing.

The Associate Editor will travel regularly throughout the winter, to North American and European events, and will be expected to work most weekends from mid-November through mid-April.

This position is a great opportunity for an individual looking to grow as a reporter and writer. The Associate Editor will be working at a high level—accumulating experience, and taking on responsibilities, that would take years to acquire at more mainstream publications.

FasterSkier has become an internationally recognized news source, and employees have access to many of the top individuals in the sport, both in North American and overseas.

The work is intense—at times, relentless—but it is also extremely rewarding. The travel alone will be eye-opening: the previous Associate Editor, in two years on the job, reported from locations including Alaska; Germany; Canmore, Alberta; the Vancouver Olympics; West Yellowstone, Montana; Estonia; Lake Placid, New York; Drammen, Norway; the World Championships in Oslo; Sun Valley, Idaho; and even Rumford, Maine.

While the Associate Editor will have many clearly defined tasks and responsibilities, there is plenty of room for pursuing projects of personal interest, and to have a lasting impact on both the website, and the sport of cross-country skiing. The position is ideal for an individual who is highly motivated, enthusiastic, and works well independently—there are few limits to the work, and on the stories that can be written.

The Associate Editor will be included in the decision-making process for many aspects of the website, including employee hiring, and strategic planning.
