Saint Mary’s University Seeks Head Club Nordic Ski Coach/Director of Club Sports

Overview and Responsibilities

The Head Nordic Ski Coach / Director of Club Sports is responsible for leading a club college Nordic ski program that aligns with the University mission through the promotion of character and virtue through sport and fosters academic and overall student success. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration and development of the program, including developing and managing a budget, training and competition schedule, travel, and equipment needs. The administrative responsibilities for this role include oversight of all student-organized club sports activities for the university (Nordic Ski, Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Ice Hockey, and Dance). The successful candidate will also support efforts to promote Saint Mary’s through club sport experiences and provide powerful experiences for students and prospective students. 

Head Club Nordic Ski Coach

  • Work within the university mission to provide a competitive, unique, and memorable club experience for student-athletes
  • Instruct and observe student-athletes in individual and team skills
  • Recruit academically and athletically qualified student-athletes within the scope of university guidelines as well as reaching annual recruiting goals to meet roster targets
  • Monitor team and individual academic success and degree completion
  • Maintain a program compliant with and university rules and guidelines
  • Build, develop, and maintain contacts and relations with alumni, high school and club coaches and benefactors
  • Oversee all necessary administrative responsibilities for the program including budget management and prompt submissions of expenses

Director of Club Sports

  • Direct, organize, supervise, and evaluate all aspects of the club sport program.
  • Meet regularly with team captains.
  • Advise clubs on travel, liability, practice, scheduling needs, and competition.
  • Manage the club sport budgets; authorize equipment purchases and repairs.
  • Design and purchase apparel.
  • Promote club sports through marketing and advertising.
  • In partnership with campus stakeholders, establish programming and partnerships that facilitate encounters with students and prospective students with the bluffs on the Winona campus, such as utilizing the Saint Mary’s trails
  • Develop and maintain the website for online registration of events, leagues, etc.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of risk management policies and procedures for club sports.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

  • Proven capacity as a coach and mentor of young people, providing life-changing impact
  • Strong and persuasive communication skills with a variety of audiences such as students, coaching and support staff, university administration, conference officials, and benefactors.
  • Leadership and motivational abilities
  • Highly effective recruiting skills
  • Comfort with the visibility, accountability, and work demands of the position.
  • Skilled in working with limited direction, creating a vision through collaboration with others and building support to realize it
  • Support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary’s University as a Lasallian Catholic university

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • 3 years of Nordic ski coaching and/or teaching experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and connections in the community of Nordic skiing
  • Demonstrated competitive spirit that emphasizes team performance, personal excellence, academic achievement, and sportsmanship
  • This 12-month position requires night and/or weekend commitments
