Alberta World Cup Academy Seeks High Performance Coach

The Alpine Insurance Alberta World Cup Academy (AIAWCA) has a current opening for a High Performance Coach (HPC) for the 2024/25 training and competition year. The HPC would work with a dynamic team of coaches, administrative and technical staff to oversee and accomplish the goals of the AIAWCA.

The AIAWCA is a designated National Team Development Center, and is part of Nordiq Canada’s national network of training centers. Our goal is to provide appropriate, world class training and racing opportunities to help develop our nation’s best ski racers. Our program hosts athletes from the Learn to Compete through Train to Win phase of the athlete development pathway. Featuring two training locations in Canmore and Calgary, AB, the AIAWCA proudly delivers flexible programming, allowing athletes to pursue post-secondary education, part-time work and other activities that complement HP training and racing. The Academy is a diverse, community driven program that welcomes athletes from across Canada.

Job Overview

The HPC will report directly to the AIAWCA Program Director (PD). In collaboration with the PD and the other High Performance Coach (HPC), the HPC will lead our Calgary daily training environment and program operations, a U23/U20 group of athletes who combine post-secondary education with high-performance training and racing. Additionally, the HPC will assist in the execution of the business plan as directed by the PD and management team. Position is located in Calgary with frequent travel to Canmore and other regional training sites.

Qualifications

  • Have a level of practical experience and expertise commensurate with the level of athlete training at the AIAWCA;
  • Preference will be given to candidates with post-secondary education completed in a relevant field, although consideration will be given to candidates who can demonstrate an equivalent level of learning acquired through other outstanding experiences or presentation of other relevant qualifications;
  • Be motivated to work in a collaborative environment to deliver world-class programming;
  • Have a Competition Coaching Development certification (CCD). International coaches with a similar level of experience will be considered at the same level.
  • Have superior expertise in all relevant technical aspects of our sport; technical,tactical, training plan development, etc;
  • Have an Alberta Class 4 driver’s license or international equivalent (or ability to obtain such in the first month on the job);
  • Experience in biathlon is an asset, including a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL),
  • High level of knowledge of contemporary Safe Sport practices and compliant with Safe Sport policies provided by Nordiq Canada and Nordiq Alberta,
  • Personal alignment with the AIAWCA values of developing the “whole person” while pursuing the highest level of sport success.

Job Description

Athlete Programming
Collaborate with a team of coaches to design and deliver a world-class, high-performance culture and daily training environment that includes but is not limited to;

– Working towards program goals and objectives.
– Contributing to annual and long-term Alberta World Cup Academy (AIAWCA) programs.
– Developing athlete YTPs, daily training and monitoring programs.

– Utilizing and building knowledge on sport science and health.
– Creating opportunities for athlete education

Lead the Calgary DTE for student athletes September through March. Support Academy activities throughout the training, competition training and competition seasons as directed by the PD.

Management
Work with the AIAWCA Chairperson, PD and management team to execute the business plan. This includes but is not limited to;

–  Fundraising and marketing initiatives and activities

–  Organize travel and logistics for camps and competitions

–  Team vans and trailer

–  Training equipment, including the Calgary rollerski treadmill

Contribute significantly to the Academy’s social media channels at a level commensurate with the HPC’s skillset, up to and including providing leadership in this area.

Sponsors and Partnerships
As required, work with key sponsors and partners to deliver on the servicing of contracts, including communication. Active role in communication, including sponsor-related social media.
Participation in identified camps or competition trips with partner organizations such as Nordiq Canada.

Community
Active engagement with the Nordic community, including but not limited to local, regional, provincial and national clubs and programs. The AIAWCA works closely with Nordiq Canada and the incumbent is expected to be an effective contributor to the AIAWCA’s accountabilities within the scope of its NC contract.

Expected start date is flexible based on personal timelines, understanding that the athlete training year begins May 1st and an earlier start date is preferable. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
