Overview
The Boulder Nordic Team (BNT), based in Boulder, CO, has been training athletes aged 8-19 in the USSS Rocky Mountain Division for over 38 years. With an average of 30-35 athletes per season, BNT is dedicated to creating an environment that promotes a lifelong passion for Nordic skiing. Some athletes compete nationally, while others use Nordic skiing to enhance training for other sports. BNT emphasizes a supportive “family” atmosphere where athletes of all ages and abilities are encouraged to succeed.
Position Summary
The Head Coach will primarily develop the overall training schedule for U16+, U14, U12 and U10 skiers as well as support their growth and development. The Head Coach will collaborate with per diem coaches and parent volunteers to manage a successful Nordic ski program that allows athletes to compete at high levels and enjoy the sport. The head coach has the added responsibility of the program manager to coordinate and supervise all aspects of our Nordic team.
Essential Duties
- Contribute to a positive environment to foster a lifelong love for the sport of Nordic skiing
- Foster an inclusive and cohesive team dynamic among athletes and coaches
- Be an active learner, communicate well, and motivate youth skiers
Team Organization & Management & Communications
- Work with per-diem coaches to manage and coach the entire team
- Report to the BNT Board of Directors at monthly board meetings
- Responsible for internal and external marketing communications (to the press, website, team social media) in conjunction with parent volunteer
- Responsible for providing website updates, maintaining team social media, and team training calendar in conjunction with a parent volunteer.
- Generate timely and excellent communications with skiers and their parents, including weekly emails regarding training location, schedule, and focus for each age group
- Responsible for hiring, supervision, leadership, training, and oversight of the per diem coaching staff and implementation of training. Report per diem attendance to the Board Treasurer for payment. Coordinate all coach passes and waivers for the season, including races
- Help athletes set goals, review progress towards goals throughout the season, and provide written feedback/reports to parents
- Responsible for waxing equipment, ski team equipment, and team rental gear
- Coordinate van needs and maintenance with parent volunteers plus coordinate van usage and drivers with coaches
- Coordinate team order night with Boulder Nordic Sport
- Assist with BNT fundraising and outreach events
Racing/Training
- Oversee training for all age groups
- Participate in all Rocky Mountain Nordic Region monthly meetings
- Responsible for all aspects of JNQ race weekends, including race entries, waxing, coaches, athlete management, transportation, hotel/lodging options, and expense sheet management in preparation for athlete invoicing by the team treasurer
- Communicate with skiers and their parents, including weekly emails regarding training location, schedule, and priorities for each age group
- Development and management of weekly, monthly, and annual training schedules and plans for all BNT athletes, including the use of Training Peaks or other training software
- Responsible for supervision, leadership, training, and oversight of the per diem coaching staff and implementation of training
- Coach skiers of all age groups with a technique focus – using extensive knowledge of classic and skate techniques with the ability to communicate technique to the athletes
- Facilitate any outside strength training as needed
- Conduct fall dry-land training sessions and winter ski training sessions
- Hold a Thanksgiving Camp (depends on interest level of BNT skiers and is compensated by athletes attending)
Optional
- The opportunity to attend Junior Nationals as a part of the RMN staff if selected by the Rocky Mountain Nordic Region
- Opportunity to attend U.S. Nationals (depends on interest level of BNT skiers)
- Opportunity to hold summer training sessions to be compensated by attending athletes
Tentative team training schedule
- Winter – on snow, Dec – Apr
- Preseason – dryland, Sept – Nov
- Spring/summer – dryland, May – Aug – compensation is in addition to contract payment
Minimum Qualifications (could be obtained by the beginning of the season)
- Competitive race experience with extensive knowledge of classic and skate technique
- 3 or more years of coaching experience preferred
- Driver’s license – clean record; experience towing a trailer helpful
- CPR/First Aid
- Minimum Level 100 USSA Cross Country Certification
- Position: August – April
- Compensation: Starting from $36,000 Sept – Apr plus incentive compensation. Summer compensation additional.
