20-for-20 with Trevor Kiers

In another 20-something-question, fill-in-the-blanks series, we checked in with the world-class U.S. and Canadian biathletes that will be competing at 2017 International Biathlon Union (IBU) Youth & Junior World Championships Feb. 22-28 in Osrblie (also known as Brezno-Osrblie), Slovakia.

Here’s 19-year-old Trevor Kiers, of the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre, who will be representing Canada at his first Junior Worlds.

“My full name is Trevor John Kiers, but you can call me Trevor. I was born in Welland, Ontario, raised in Sprucedale, Ontario, and one thing you should know about my hometown is that it’s super tiny, only 800 residences in the township, very spread out, but such a tight community.

I started cross-country skiing when I was 13 turning 14, and started biathlon that same year, thanks to the cadet program, and more specifically, Capt. Steve Strom.

I currently train in Canmore, Alberta, with the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre.

If I’m not skiing, you might find me working at Canadian Tire 🙂.

If I had to pick a favorite book, it would be the Narnia series (easy to read, but a good message).

One of the things I’m most excited about for Youth/Junior World Championships in Brezno-Osrblie is the course, it’s fast, everything is going to be super quick, the big succession of hills brings you to the top of the course, being a light guy, only 140 lbs, it gives me a chance to really put myself to the test.

This will be my first Youth/Junior World Championships, and this year, I’m competing as a junior. The races I’m especially targeting there are the sprint and relay.

The best advice anyone ever gave me about skiing or racing was ‘Biathlon is won on the range,’ Dan S. Guay said that to me once, and it’s stuck ever since.

One of the best race memories I have is cleaning a race at the IBU Junior cup in Lenzerheide.

If I could meet one World Cup skier, it would be Ole Einer [Bjørndalen].

If I don’t end up being a professional skier, I’ll probably be big into music, but I could see myself still in the sport industry, just not sure where I would fit in.

I graduated in the summer of 2015 from high school and unfortunately haven’t had the chance to follow up on post-secondary yet.
