Stewart, Tereshchenko Win Great Glen To Bretton Woods Nordic Adventure

BRETTON WOODS, NH – David Stewart, of Ripton, VT, skied to victory at the second annual Banknorth Great Glen to Bretton Woods 50 km Nordic Adventure Classical Ski Race, on Sunday, March 9.

“It was a lot of fun – quite an adventure, actually,” said Stewart at the finish. “The altitude gain made for some diverse and challenging conditions. Fresh snow on the long downhill section made for easy going.”

Stewart covered the course in 2:54:02.5, taking victory in a field of 500 racers. Rounding out the top three places were second place finisher Jon Arne Enevoldsen, of Waitsfield, VT (2:56:31.5), and David Herr, of Canaan, VT (3:14:22.1), in third.

In the women’s race, Natasha Tereshchenko, of Jeffersonville,VT, finished first with a time of 3:22:45.3. Finishing second was Leslie Krichko, of Ridegefield, CT (3:30:00.9), and Ann Rasmussen, of Plymouth, NH (3:30:23.5), took third place.

A 25 km option was also available. Toby Wells, of Putney, VT, took top honors with a time of 1:31:15. Finishing second in the men’s division was Nate Harvey, of Glen, NH (1:38:50), and Evan Graves, of Presque Isle, Maine (1:47:30), took third. First
place in the women’s division went to Liz Kantack, of Jackson, NH (1:58:32). Nancy Davis, of Underhill, VT (2:00:16), took second and Candice Raines, of Rutland, VT(2:04:28), placed third.

A point-to-point event similar in format to the Canadian Ski Marathon or Birkebeiner of Wisconsin, the Banknorth Great Glen to Bretton Woods Nordic Adventure began with a mass start at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center in Pinkham Notch, NH. After
skiing on the Great Glen system, a narrow wooded trail lead participants into the White Mountain National Forest. The route joined with the Dolly Copp ski trail system, continuing on to the Pinkham B Road (closed in winter). From Pinkham B, skiers traveled the Presidential Range Rail Trail to Jefferson Notch Road. The greatest climb of the event took skiers to the top of Jefferson Notch, an elevation of 3000 feet. A long descent to the Cog Railway Base Road in Bretton Woods lead to the final kilometers on the Bretton Woods Nordic system. The grand Mount Washington Hotel came into view as adventurers skied out of the wooded trails and crossed the Victorian pedestrian bridge toward the finish line adjacent to Bretton Woods’s new Nordic Center. An awards party with refreshments provided the final reward to those undertaking the second annual Banknorth Great Glen to Bretton Woods Nordic Adventure.

“We were very excited for this year’s race. Last year, due to tough snow conditions, we were unable to start the event on the Great Glen side of Mt. Washington and held the entire event on the Bretton Woods Nordic trail system. With the early and
consistent snow we have had, this year’s race covered the full course,” said Event Director Sue Wemyss, a 1984 Nordic Ski Olympian.

This New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) sanctioned event was the third event in the New England Marathon Series that included races in Craftsbury, VT and Rangeley, Maine. The event was held with assistance from of the U.S. Forest Service, New Hampshire Trails Bureau, New Hampshire Department of Transportation, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue, and several local snowmobile clubs.
