Spring Series Returns to Colorado

The Colorado International Spring Series (CISS) is making a return engagement to ski areas in Grand County, Colorado for the 2005 edition of the week-long event. Nordic athletes from around the world will test themselves against North America's best skiers from March 26-April 2. Devil's Thumb Ranch, the title sponsor of this year’s series, will host three days of racing on their 125-kilometer trail system. This winter marked the opening of the Broad Axe Barn at Devil’s Thumb; a 26,000 square foot building which houses the expanded Nordic center. Two other sponsors, Snow Mountain Ranch and Winter Park Resort, will be the venues for the other three events. This years six race series will also include the finale of the 2005 North American Continental Cup Supertour.

The Colorado International Spring Series will utilize a stage race format, similar to the Tour de France. Introduced to cross-country ski racing in the inaugural, 2004 event, racers will compete for the yellow bib and over $18,000 in prize money. Leaders in sprint, climbing, and top junior categories will also be awarded for individual races and the overall series. Last, but certainly not least, the Fun leader bib is awarded based on the previous night’s social event. While no prize money goes to those who don the red bib, it carries great prestige, as well as spiritual significance.

Citizen racers will have the opportunity to test their skills on the same exciting courses as the pros, while competing for $15,000 in merchandise.

Don't miss your only chance this year to see many of the world’s best cross-country ski racers in action on the trails of Colorado. Oxygen is usually in short supply, but snow and sunshine are sure to be plentiful.
