The Department of Health & Human Development (HHD) at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, MT, is actively seeking applications for graduate study in applied exercise physiology (Masters degree only; Fall 2011). Dr Dan Heil (dheil@montana.edu), a Professor in exercise physiology, specializes in studies of physiological and biomechanical determinants of Nordic skiing performance, as well as the development of models of energy expenditure during sport and work performance.
Our lab has a new oversized treadmill for roller ski testing of Nordic skiers and we are planning some collaborative studies on Nordic skiing with several other research labs. Here is an on-line article recently posted by the MSU Media Services about the lab’s testing of the MSU Nordic Ski Team:

Graduate Assistantships (teaching and research) may be available to qualified applicants, the details of which are specific to each faculty member. Applicants should contact Dr. Heil directly about the availability of assistants for the upcoming Fall semester.
Qualifications: In general, the best qualified applicants will have an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, or related field (such as biology), with undergraduate coursework that includes:
Anatomy and Physiology (1 yr + labs)
Inorganic Chemistry
Physics
Statistics
Anatomical Kinesiology
Biomechanics
Exercise Physiology
Exercise Testing & Prescription
Applicants who do not have this coursework within their submitted transcripts when applying may be required to take some of these courses as prerequisites to the HHD graduate program in exercise physiology.
Deadline for Applications: While applicants can apply at any time to the graduate program, the first round of reviews for applicants wanting to begin in the Fall of 2011 begins after February 15th, 2011.

Ben Theyerl was born into a family now three-generations into nordic ski racing in the US. He grew up skiing for Chippewa Valley Nordic in his native Eau Claire, Wisconsin, before spending four years racing for Colby College in Maine. He currently mixes writing and skiing while based out of Crested Butte, CO, where he coaches the best group of high schoolers one could hope to find.
