The Mayor’s Challenge SuperTour at Wirth Park (Minneapolis) was this last weekend, and we (CXC) were pretty excited with our results in both the classic and skate: In four races, we had four 1sts, two 2nds, and two 3rds — plus a few more finishes in the top-six, which pay out prize money.
Races were held in frigid conditions, with a mix of man-made and natural snow, including a small amount which fell Friday night. We tested Friday morning with the usual suspects: (LF Blue, HF Blue, Cold Powder, HF Blue and Moly). Even though it was extremely cold, we found that HF Blue by itself was the fastest of the bunch. We had some Jetstream Blue powder on a pair of skis, and the pure-fluoro topcoat clearly improved speed. So that’s what we raced on both day: HF Blue with the Jetstream powder topcoat. We tested HelX and Bloc the morning of the skate race and it didn’t seem to improve things (first time this year, though), so obviously we left that off.
Sunday’s classic race was, again, quite cold, so kick was very simpleĀ — anything would work, with drag being the tough part. We torched in a layer of Base Green as a binder and some more as a kicker, and that worked just fine. It was pretty abrasive on course, so the torching was an important step — without it in testing, we were losing quite a bit of wax. Sanding the kick zones was crucial as well.
