We haven’t done a weekly roundup in a little while, and international racing has more or less ended: the World Cup season for skiing finished with the World Cup Finals series in Stockholm and Falun, Sweden, while biathletes called it a season after a three-race weekend in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
FasterSkier staff was on site in Sweden to document all the action, where Dario Cologna of Switzerland and Marit Bjørgen of Norway won both the mini-tours and the overall World Cup titles; Eirik Brandsdal of Norway, Alex Harvey of Canada and Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland also snuck in victories, while Therese Johaug of Norway and Petr Sedov of Russia had the fastest times in the pursuits. It was an exciting weekend for North America, with Kikkan Randall’s crystal sprint globe and Harvey’s first victory just a few of the many highlights.
In Siberia, the favorites also picked up wins, with overall World Cup winners Magdalena Neuner of Germany and Martin Fourcade of France winning one and two races respectively; second-place finishers in the overall rankings Darya Domracheva of Belarus and Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway also stood atop the podium. Tim Burke of the U.S. had a season-best fourth place finish while American Susan Dunklee and Canadian Zina Kocher also made the top ten.
The OPA Cup also finished up in Toblach, Italy, where Holly Brooks of the U.S. won two of three races including the pursuit for the overall title.
North American biathletes are done for good, after Leif Nordgren and Annelies Cook swept U.S. national championships and Marc-Andre Bedard and Rosanna Crawford swept Canadian national championships.
Canadian skiers finished their seasons at national championships in Quebec. The first races were held in the absence of the World Cup team, and Ida Sargent of the U.S. Ski Team and Craftsbury GRP and Ivan Babikov of the Canadian National team won the interval-start classic races. Then, the World Cup squad returned, and Alex Harvey won the next two races before tying with Devon Kershaw in the marathon. Emily Nishikawa picked up the title in the interval-start skate before Chandra Crawford took over and won the sprint and 30 k.
Finally, a few hours south at SuperTour Finals in Craftsbury, Vermont, U.S. Ski Team members Jessie Diggins, Sadie Bjornsen, Simi Hamilton, and Kris Freeman have all picked up victories.
Here’s a roundup of everything, including results, that we’ve covered since the last roundup.
