The 28th Annual Craftsbury Marathon blends the old and the new this winter. The new course format reflects a return of sorts to the early days of the event, but the route has been rearranged to create a new and exciting experience for spectators and racers alike with the Center as the hub for all sorts of activity.
Starting in the iconic New England setting of the Common, the new course will flow gently downhill and across the frozen expanse of Little Hosmer pond before climbing to the Center and a hive of activity. A unique spectating opportunity, the hub at the Center will offer family, friends and supporters the opportunity to see racers eight times during the course of the 50k event – all without leaving the comfort of the bratwurst stand, hot cider and festive warming bonfires. Few other marathon events offer such easy access to the competitors at so many points of the race.
The participants will also have opportunity to refuel at the hub as well. Whether a quick bite for the seasoned competitor or a more leisurely enjoyment of soup or savories for the tourist, every participant should find something to their liking provided by the generous local restaurants that have volunteered their support for the event.
Adequately refueled, skiers can look forward to experiencing some of the classic varied terrain and scenery of New England on each spoke of the course: the steep banks along Big Hosmer, the dense spruces and cedars along Ruthie’s Run, an open hardwood descent on Sam’s, and fields with views that encompass the Green Mountain chain from Belvidere to Camel’s Hump as you make your way back toward the Common. This course has a little bit of everything.
The only downside is that time is running out to sign up for the event. Registration for individual racers closes on the 24th of January – don’t miss out on some of the best conditions we’ve had for classic skiing. Sign up today at <. See you at the races!
