Being a Swiss company and being a company in the ski industry, an industry so tied in with nature, Toko is a very environmentally conscious company. The EU has very stringent standards of manufacturing, far more strict than in the US, which Toko is glad to adhere to. Additionally, many Toko products are Bluesign certified. Bluesign is an independent and internationally recognized quality certification program that conducts regular audits of manufacturing chains testing for environmental compatibility and responsible stewardship of natural resources. Bluesign does not just evaluate the end product, but pays close attention to waste, energy consumption, and emissions produced during the manufacturing phase.
We are proud to point out that all Toko NF waxes are Bluesign certified as well as some of our other waxes (grip waxes and klisters for example).
Head Toko Chemist Udo Raunjak comments, “We use very pure raw materials without any impurities (such as oil, ether, ester, and aromates). The purity has a great influence on the biodegradability. Our NF waxes are rated at over 60% breakdown in 28 days which is remarkable for a ski wax. There are other types of waxes being used out there that are being called ECO friendly such as hydrogenated and refined natural waxes. These are more unfriendly to the environment though as they need to be processed aggressively. They need to be removed with a solvent, then the solvent needs to be removed, then the wax needs to be hydrated, and then there is another step of removing other byproducts of the hydration step. These types of waxes sound friendly, but the reality is that it requires three more production steps and a lot of solvent and energy to manufacture them.”
