Press Release NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine (Feb. 9, 2021) – On Wednesday, the mixed relay event will open the 11-day IBU Biathlon World Championships in Pokljuka, Slovenia, but the annual highlight of the IBU schedule will, as with most sporting events, look drastically different this year. As the more than 300 athletes from 38 countries descend on Pokljuka, gone will be the throngs of biathlon-mad fans that fill the stands and line the course, cheering on...

Day two of the Tour de Ski offered the American women the Sisyphean task of earning back time after a miss on ski and wax selection in Stage 1 prevented them from performing to their capability. This was particularly so for Jessie Diggins, a favorite for the overall tour podium who finished the first stage in 29th 1:20 behind Norway’s pace-setting Theresa Johaug. Her teammate Sadie Maubet Bjornsen, also a top all-arounder, was in the...

For Canada, Emma Lunders placed...

The Breakthrough: Kelsey Dickinson 2nd in Sjusjøen, Norway’s IBU Cup

On Thanksgiving, it’s worth celebrating a breakthrough moment. When wins and podiums become quotidian, perhaps the luster wears over time. Sports fans love the breakthrough — the moment it first comes together for an athlete. In biathlon, the moving parts are many. The fitness, the pacing, the skis, the steady mental state on the range, the breathing, the shooting, the wind flags, and the targets falling — they all must align. Kelsey Dickinson, 26, of...

Speaking to Matt Emmons, I was reminded that much of sport remains in the realm of capturing a focused mental state. Emmons, at thirty eight years old, serves as the shooting coach for U.S. biathlon. In as much as he hones body position and breathing techniques on the range, he’s also present to coach clearing the mind when the heart rate thumps and the internal tick-tock of time on the shooting range is part of...

Day Three: U.S. Biathlon Fall Team Trials

The third and final day of the Soldier Hollow U.S. Biathlon Fall Team Trials was postponed temporarily due to snowfall. An occurrence that normally would not quell the skis, but can make skate rollerskis squirrely.  After a delay, and with the course sufficiently dry, the men and women raced a 10-kilometer and 7.5 k sprint, respectively.  Susan Dunklee (USBA) won the women’s race in a time of 24:16.53 while missing a single target standing. Joanne...

According to the USBA selection criteria, the remaining World Cup Period 1 spots...

The USBA X-Team: Zane Fields and Luke Brown

For many years the U.S. Biathlon Association (USBA) has invested in talent. Athletes who demonstrate ski-speed and a knack for shooting on the firing range receive what amounts to a cushioned sport-specific transition. In this case, Luke Brown (Crosscut Mountain Sports/USBA) and Zane Fields (USBA) are the latest cross-country athletes embraced by the USBA’s X-Team.  Brown, who is in his second year removed from Dartmouth, and Fields who is fresh off a four year stint...

US Biathletes Enlist: Prep for Life and Racing

Career arcs have a beginning, an apogee, and an eventual end. So far, US Biathlon’s Sean Doherty has been on an ascendant path. He’s the most decorated career IBU Youth/Junior Worlds medalist with 10 total. With two Olympics to his name, and a 25th overall ranking on the World Cup last season, year by year Doherty’s training has yielded race improvements.  Why shake it up? At 24-years-old, and two full winters before the 2022 Olympics,...

IBU Moves Forward on Building Equity

The numbers speak the truth when it comes to leadership in Olympic sport. Let’s take International Technical Officials (ITOs), the people responsible for a range of duties like enforcing rules and race timing protocol during competition. Across four Olympics, including summer and winter Games from 2010-2014, women constituted no greater than 30 percent of ITOs. On the coaching side, the numbers were starker. Between 2010 and 2014, female accredited coaches at the Olympics never rose...

2019 Coach of the Year

With the 2018/2019 season officially in the rearview, FasterSkier is running a series of articles highlighting some of the players and performances from the season. This honor goes to the North American coach who most deserves recognition for their impact on the trajectory of their athletes. In April of 2018, Armin Auchentaller was hired to lead the U.S. Women’s Biathlon team. The position was not totally new for Auchentaller as he had worked with the...

Russia’s Loginov wins IBU sprint in Oberhof; Doherty in 22nd

The men’s 10-kilometer sprint in Oberhof, Germany was a bit more in synch with recent weather trends in some parts of stormy Europe: clouds descended, the wind picked up, and steady snow began to fall during the race. This was in contrast to weather conditions during Thursday’s women’s sprint when uncharacteristically Oberhof found itself basked in intermittent sunshine and relatively calm winds. By the time athletes began their standing shooting stage on Friday, the...

US Biathlon’s New Coaches, Michael Gries and Armin Auchentaller, Lead the Way

This season, the US Biathlon Association (USBA) hired on two new coaches; 47-year-old Armin Auchentaller from Italy and Germany’s 42-year-old Michael Greis. Auchentaller’s primary duties are with the women’s team whereas Greis will focus on the men. The U.S. team comes off the retirements of two of its steady-stars; Lowell Bailey and Tim Burke. (Burke was hired in May as USBA’s athlete development manager.) The hiring of the two coaches is part of a plan...

The Man, The Myth, The Legend: Currier Retires from Biathlon

The first time I contacted Russell Currier for a retirement interview, it was mid-April. I had asked him to share his story, and no more than 24 hours after my initial email to Currier, I received a response. “Yeah, let’s do that. I’m actually in Bozeman right meow,” he’d written. Digging through my memory bank, I recalled Currier having come to Bozeman one other time. Two Aprils ago, the Stockholm, Maine, native spent a...
