Heads turned and ears perked up alongside the course at U.S. Cross Country Championships on Sunday as Kyle Bratrud was rumored to be leading the men's 15 k freestyle individual start. In fact, the Northern Michigan senior led from start to finish, and ended up winning for his first top 20 at nationals.
A former top World Junior Championships competitor from Vermont, Kevin Cutts now coaches a ski gymnasium in Sweden. He chatted with FasterSkier about how he sees U.S. skiing, now that he's living abroad - and concludes that North America isn't as far behind as we think we are.
At the 2014 NCAA Championships, Kyle Bratrud was the first American in the 15 k classic. The result was the highlight of his college career to date. However, the skier is much more than his results suggest and the Minnesota native's relationship with the sport shows that several strong influences from his coaches have helped him get where he is today.
