Snowy Trails and Packed Fields Make a Barnburner in Hochfilzen; Le Guellec, Hakkinen Top-Ten in Pursuit

There were a lot of unusual things about the World Cup biathlon races in Hochfilzen, Austria on Saturday. First, there was the inch of snow that fell during the men’s 12.5 k pursuit. Then, there was the fact that the field was incredibly compressed thanks to some strange weather in the original sprint race. “The snow storm that stopped [mid-race on Thursday] had a bigger effect than I expected,” U.S. biathlete Jay Hakkinen told FasterSkier....

Team Canada wrapped up its World Cup selection trials in Canmore on Tuesday with a pair of mass start races, which were won by Megan Imrie and Nathan Smith. With barely any snow in Scandinavia, the team was lucky to be at home in Canmore, where there has been skiing thanks to “Frozen Thunder,” a snow-saving operation. Lake Placid SuperTour Classic – A Picture’s Worth…

Just over a week ago, FasterSkier traveled to Lake Placid for two days of SuperTour action. The events doubled as an EISA college carnival. Saturday featured a 6/10km classic individual start race held at the Lake Placid Jumping Complex. A midweek storm earlier in the week dumped plenty of snow on the trails at the planned venue – the Olympic trails of Mt. Van Hovenberg. But organizers chose to keep the races at the foot...

West Yellowstone SuperTour: Faces of the Women’s Distance Race

The early races of a season are when we are able to pore over the results, see whose careful planning and hard training has worked best, who made big improvements and whose priorities have changed, but they are also the time when we are once again reminded why we love this sport.  Here is a visual reminder from the eyes of FasterSkier photographer Win Goodbody that no matter what the results say the efforts are...
