Down a quart heading into the IBU World Cup #2 in Hochfilzen, Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen rallied to win Friday's sprint by more than 10 seconds. Susan Dunklee led the U.S. in 29th and Canada's Rosanna Crawford was another 5 seconds back in 34th.
Emma Lunder placed 30th in her World Cup debut last season. The Canadian biathlete has since gained funding, training partners, and motivation: "Anytime I'm doing a really brutal workout, I just think to myself, if you can get through this, you're one step closer to racing in Pokljuka again!"
Christian Gow placed sixth in the men's individual and Sarah Beaudry and Julia Ransom sixth and seventh in the women's race at World Youth and Junior Championships on Wednesday. American Sean Doherty captured his second-straight gold medal in as many races at the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships on Sunday in Presque Isle, Maine, and Canadian Sarah Beaudry rose from 29th to a bronze medal in the junior women's pursuit. Another Canadian, Julia Ransom followed in fourth.
After graduating from high school and joining the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre for her first season of full-time training, Sarah Beaudry wanted more from her third Youth World Championships appearance than a couple more finishes in the 20's and 30's. On Tuesday, she got it - a fifth-place result that was just 20 seconds from the podium.
