The U.S. Biathlon Association will reduce its World Cup team to just three men and three women in the beginning of January, ruling out relays in Oberhof, but it's only temporary - seven men and women will race on the IBU Cup and potentially earn promotions to the top circuit.
U.S. Biathlon, unlike some national teams, doesn't select its World Cup team each spring. Certain team members prequalify, but there were at least two spots up for grabs at the four-race rollerski trials held in August and October in Jericho, Vt. The final team was announced Tuesday, one month before the season starts in Sweden. (Updated)
Lowell Bailey went 2 for 2 on the weekend in Jericho, and two different U.S. women edged Canada's Rosanna Crawford for victories at the North American Rollerski Championships at the Ethan Allen Firing Range.
The U.S. Biathlon Association is focusing resources on the future: for the first time in years, there's a development team, a recruitment camp, coaches seminars and regional development efforts. Plus, High Performance Director Bernd Eisenbichler is now the Chief of Sport, and will also oversee development - that's "why I’m staying with U.S. biathlon," he said.
It was shaping up to be another battle between the newest star of the Gross family, biathlon royalty from Germany, and upstart Sean Doherty from the United States. But a Russian swept in to take gold in the youth men's individual race. Nevertheless, two Canadians also made the flower ceremony and two American women were top ten in their own individual competition.

USBA picked 11 athletes to send to Europe this fall, based on trials races this summer in Jericho and last week at Soldier Hollow. Some of them will be picked for Sochi - but who? We clarify the qualification process, as well as getting some comments from High Performance Director Bernd Eisenbichler about the performances he saw in Utah last week.
With a bevvy of international podiums by North American men and a group of four U.S. and Canadian women who ended the season ranked in the 40's, it was tough to pick our biathletes of the year. But Americans Tim Burke and Annelies Cook stood out to snag top honors.
Moving right along with our Skier of the Year awards, we’re delighted to introduce Junior of the Year, which goes to U.S. biathlete Sean Doherty and Canadian Anne-Marie Comeau. Honorable mentions included as well.
Once again, early penalties seemed to put Sean Doherty's medal in jeopardy. But clean, fast shooting and quick skiing in the later stages of the youth men's 12.5 k individual put the American back on the podium for a record third time, and he earned his second silver medal of this year's World Youth Championships to go with gold from the pursuit.
After dropping from second to fourth with two penalties in the very first stage, Sean Doherty calmly did as he had trained, knocked down his targets, and skied to a 30-second victory that left him enough time to celebrate his first World Championship by carrying an American flag across the line.
Sean Doherty achieved a personal best and made U.S. history on Friday, placing second in the 7.5 k sprint opener at the IBU Youth/Junior World Championships in Obertilliach, Austria. Just 3.6 seconds out of first, Doherty was still soaking up the result.
Sean Doherty (Vermont Collegiate Biathlon) and Anna Kubek (Mount Itasca) dominated their fields so thoroughly that it was tough for anyone else to come close enough tot qualify automatically, thanks to USBA's percent-back system. But with a little discretion, ten young biathletes are bound for Obertilliach, Austria, later this month.
Three top young biathletes spent a ten days as part of a team in Sweden, training, going to school, and racing alongside their hosts. “American kids have to sacrifice more if they want to go into full-time racing,” said Tara Geraghty-Moats.
With SuperTour Finals and U.S. Distance Nationals wrapping up in Craftsbury, Vermont, the North American ski community can call it a wrap on another season. Despite a general lack of snow, the finale in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom was a success – particularly for the U.S. Ski Team’s Kris Freeman, who after a disappointing World Cup season returned to the States to claim the overall win at SuperTour Finals and then the national title in the...
The biathlon season may have ended in North America a few weeks ago, but that hasn’t stopped a group of U.S. juniors from racing their way from to the top. Sean Doherty (Saratoga Biathlon), Tara Geraghty-Moats (Craftsbury Nordic Ski Club/Ethan Allen Biathlon Club), and Casey Smith (Methow Valley Biathlon) flew to Solefteå, Sweden as part of an exchange organized by U.S. Head Coach Per Nilsson.
