SMST2 and U.S. Ski Team D-team member Ben Saxton describes a workout his Stratton team does almost every other week in the summer. "It is perfect for building a strong base as we move forward into higher intensity intervals later on in the training year," he explains.
During their recent trip to Bozeman, Mont., FasterSkier sat down with Sophie and Isabel Caldwell to reflect on Sophie's breakthrough season with the U.S. Ski Team, the sisters' future plans, and what it means to be a Caldwell.
Sophie Caldwell broke her funny bone just over a week ago during a team mountain-bike session in Bend, Ore., and while it's no laughing matter, she's found humor in the situation. "I actually accidentally found myself in a spin class for senior citizens and it was one of the top ten sweatiest workouts of my life," she explains. "We did stage 14 of the Tour of Italy."
Anyone who follows U.S. racing closely knows the name Patrick O'Brien. He's been a staple at Craftsbury for the last four years, captained the Dartmouth ski team, and is now delving into a career as head coach of the Stratton T2 Team -- something he didn't necessarily anticipate but sees as a good fit and ideal transition.
Ben Saxton and Paddy Caldwell were two new names on the 2014/2015 U.S. Ski Team nominations released last Friday. Both with Stratton ties, the two were asked to join the D-team, an unfunded development squad back after a one-year hiatus.
SMST2 Head Coach Gus Kaeding, 29, came to the striking realization this winter that he couldn't see himself coaching in 10 years. With that in mind, he decided to plot a new future, which could include a master's in finance. His contract is up at the end of June, but Kaeding plans to help Stratton transition to a new elite-team coach.
The Stratton Mountain School is seeking to hire a full-time coach for their SMS T2 program.

Photos from Tuesday's 4 x 5 k mixed relay, a new event at U.S. Distance Nationals, which was held at 5 p.m. in Anchorage and included 26 teams, 18 of which were vying for a national title.
It's sure to be an exciting day at Kincaid Park on Tuesday for the first team event at U.S. nationals in at least a decade, and unlike most relays, this one's coed. Stay tuned for a showdown between APU, Stratton, Craftsbury, Sun Valley and several college teams.
Gus Kaeding literally had one foot out the door and his vehicle running Tuesday morning, but he couldn’t draw himself away from what was unfolding some 3,700 miles away in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Two of his skiers were in their first sprint finals of their career, one of which was on his way to making U.S. history.

On Thursday, a classic-sprint showdown among some of the top Canadian and U.S. nordic skiers took place on Frozen Thunder. "Let’s be honest," men's winner Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess says. "Winning a race against [Andy Newell and Simi Hamilton], even in a tune up event, even with a relatively small field, even in October, it still makes a good time even better."
Jessie Diggins loves to ski. That's a good thing because it's her full-time job as a World Cup skier training with the Stratton Mountain School T2 and U.S. Ski teams. At the same time, the 21-year-old has learned to step back, have fun and try new activities to keep things light.
