2009 January

WHISTLER – The ancient Greek and Roman soothsayers predicted the future by reading the entrails of animals or birds. Canadian Olympic cross-country skier Sara Renner is partial to mouse droppings. Like a fortune teller gazing into a crystal ball, Renner sees positive signs from rodent leavings that that were evident in the mess hall when the Canadian team de-camped here for a World Cup pre-Olympic event at Whistler Olympic Park. Between Friday and Sunday, the...

Another beautiful day in Whistler. Everyone was expecting the pretty nasty weather that is standard below the clouds here and are "challenging" waxing conditions. All the national teams and ski companies brought over the hairies skis with new base mate...

More of the same great skiing in Whistler–a virtual carbon copy of yesterday, if not a little warmer still.  The stadium is totally complete with tracks set for the sprint course, v-boards, fencing, and jumbo-tron.  So far, however, this event feels like the smallest World Cup event I’ve seen.  Many teams are much smaller than [...]

Mountain Top/Tippmann Paintball Biathlon

The Fourth annual Mountain Top Inn / Tippmann Paintball Biathlon will be held on the beautifully groomed trails of the Mountain Top Nordic Center in Chittenden, Vermont on the evening of January 24, and all day on January 25th. Paintball Biathlon combines the sports of Nordic skiing and target shooting with paintball markers. Unlike traditional Biathlon, where competitors are penalized for missing the targets by skiing a penalty lap, skiers in The Mt Top Inn...

2009 US Nationals, Anchorage, AK & Swix LF3 Cold Powder

2009 US Nationals proved to be some of the coldest racing we have experienced in a long time. The race organizers did a great job, but the weather just did not cooperate. The result was two of four events were canceled due to cold temperatures. Despite the cold conditions, Swix Sport USA had outstanding success on the waxing front. With the week of racing said and done, more than 55 viles of Swix LF3 Cold...

A small section of the crowd in Oberhof. All is well here in Germany.  Racing went pretty well last week and it felt great to get back in the points.  I was 22nd in the sprint (out of 118 racers) and was only around 14 seconds out of the top ten.  Although results in the 20’s [...]

Getting Settled in on the World Cup With Help of Locals

I arrived here at Nat Brown’s ranch, north of Princeton BC,  on Monday night.    The Slovenian team is being hosted by the Princeton Nordic community, and are staying in residences near the ski trails on Nat’s ranch.    The ranch is in a small river valley situated at 3100 feet, with open fields and wooded hillsides.   The meadows are dotted with heritage log buildings, and it’s rustic and beautiful. The Slovenian team arrived very late on...

My attention drifts with the sights of Vancouver's skyline as I wind through the city streets. It's turning dark. Humidity drizzles from the sky. A caravan of three minivans carries a group of skiers that have converged from various outposts - Anchorag...

We woke up this morning to the first sunny day in Whistler since we arrived last Friday.  In the short time I’ve spent here, I’ve realized that there aren’t that many nice days in Whistler, but the days when the sun actually does come out are beautiful! As of today, all of the American athletes are in town.   [...]

Fischer Reflects on US Nationals

At the recently completed 2009 US Cross Country National Championships in Anchorage, Alaska, Fischer skiers won 3 out of the 4 races held during the bitterly cold week.  Originally scheduled for 8 races, cold temperatures below the FIS minimum standard forced the cancellation of the Men’s and Women’s distance classic race and the Men’s and Women’s team sprint competition. On Monday, January 5th, both the Women’s 5km freestyle and the Men’s 10km freestyle races were...

I started to reminisce about the first portion of our race season as we reunited with our van in Seattle, WA. We had left our van in the greater Seattle area at Bob and Kelli Owen’s home since flying back to the Midwest on December 15th. It was cool looking at all the gear left [...]

A Look Back at the First Two Months: US and Canada

With the Vancouver World Cups just a few days away, the US and Canadian ski teams are preparing to start the next phase of the international racing season.  The highlight, of course, is the World Championships, scheduled for mid-February in the Czech Republic.  And while the athletes, coaches, and service personnel are all looking forward at this point, it can be useful to examine the past several months of racing. Overall, it was somewhat of...

It’s back to work this week, in Ruhpolding, Germany, site of IBU World Cup #5.  Last week was a good step forward for the team in Oberhof.  We managed an 11th place in the opening relay event, but the big improvement came in the Sprint competition on Saturday evening.  The events drew in 25,000 people [...]

Jay Hakkinen changes with Tim Burke in the Mens Biathlon 4×7.5km Relay Final of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games. The two men hope to be part of the team that wins the first U.S. Olympic medal in the sport of biathlon in 2010. As the men’s 4×7.5-kilometer biathlon relay started at the 2006 Olympics, few could have guessed what would happen in the first leg of the race. American Jay Hakkinen skated into the...

Skiing today at WOP (Whistler Olympic Park) was 45 degrees warmer than skiing in AK last week! The snow was pretty good relatively firm fast wet snow with the standard 10 minutes of wet snow to make it really slow skiing for a while. divbr //divdivThe...

North American Biathlon Series # 5

Jericho VT – The North American Biathlon Series went to Ethan Allen Biathlon Range in Jericho, Vermont for its 5th race series of the year. Similar to the Mt Itasca NorAM Series, conditions continued to be cold with temperatures staying around 0F for Saturday’s Sprint Competition and low teens for Sunday’s Mass Start event. Due to lack of snow, the course followed the roller-ski loop. The staff of the National Guard Biathlon Office worked hard...
