2009 March

In attempt to get back on Alaska-time and off east-coast-time I laid down for a nap at 5:30pm thinking when I got up I would be able to keep my eyes open a little later. That "little nap" turned into a 14hrs snooze-fest, where I didn't wake up until 7:30 the next morning. I guess that's an even better way of adjusting to a time zone and recovering from a week of 5 races.I feel like my fitness

The freestyle prologues at Falun - 2.5km for women, 3.3km for men - are going to be interesting. They're akin to the Tour de Ski prologues in Oberhof on December 27 (which were run over 3.7km for men and 2.8km for women) with the lung-busting difference that the Falun races are essentially just out-and-back climbs up the Mordarbacken. (men's course map - women's course map) You remember last

“Get Your Foot Across the Finish Line First,” An Interview With Andy Newell

Phil Bowen: The first I remember of you was at a twisty, turny 800m sprint race in Silverstar, BC. You ended up in the final vs. Carl Swenson, who was winning every time he strapped on skate skis those days. Was that your first big result? When did you begin to really dedicate yourself to ski racing? Because it seems like you have a lot of other interests… Andy Newell: Yeah… that sprint was awesome!...

It seems like I'm the odd man out (see a href="http://fasterskier.com/2009/03/live-blogging-from-todays-wc-sprint/"here/a and a href="http://nordiccommentaryproject.blogspot.com/"here/a) when it comes to re-capping races. I guess having re-caps come ou...

Stockholm, Sweden – The Norwegian men swept the podium in the first event of the World Cup Final. Johan Kjoelstad led the way, skiing away from teammates John Kristian Dahl and Eldar Roenning on the last hill to claim the victory. The three Norwegians opened a gap midway through the A-Final, and as they approached the last large climb, it was only a question of which of them would take the top spot. It was...

Stockholm, Sweden – Petra Majdic (SLO) continued her winning ways, overcoming a crash in the quarterfinals to win the last World Cup sprint of the season.  Aino Kaisa Saarinen (FIN), who is attempting to overcome a 200 point deficit in the overall standings, finished second. Majdic wrapped up the sprint title weeks ago, but is now looking to win the overall as well.  She qualified in 9th, but in her quarterfinal, she crashed on the...

Apparently all the cool kids do live coverage now, but I swear I didn't know FS was doing it when I started watching my illicit NRK steam. This internet business is getting intense.. I'll see your live blog and raise you a... um... live recap? With more typos? Who knows. Anyway....Women's quarters were totally predictable until --Petra's quaterfinal -- she put her tips straight into

Rebecca Dussault (Saab Salomon Factory Team) skied to a 58 second win over Brooke Gosling in women’s 30km Mass Start at Canadian Nationals.  Ekaterina Vinogradova was third and Shayla Swanson fourth. In the men’s 50km, Gord Jewett edged Mike Sinnott (Saab Salomon Factory Team) by 2.9 seconds.  Noah Hoffman was just 6.5 seconds back in third, and Graham Nishikawa +7.7 in fourth. The following is Dussault’s recap of the race:

A group of athletes including Hans Halvorsen, Elena Luethi, John McGlenn, David Sinclair, and Daniel Moore are traveling to Europe today. We're headed to Austria (Kossen) for a couple days of training before going to Northern Italy (Mals) for a week of...

World Cup Finals Start Today, Overall Title to be Decided

Stockholm, Sweden – The end of the 2008/2009 World Cup season draws near as the World Cup Final and Nordic Cup gets underway in downtown Stockholm this afternoon. The World Cup final consists of four races – a classic sprint today, a 2.5/3.3km freestyle on Friday, a 10/20km pursuit on Saturday, and a 10/15km handicap start on Sunday. The event functions like a mini Tour de Ski, with the first across the line on Sunday...

What do you do with your hard earned fitness now that the big races are over? Have you ever wondered how far you could ski?  March might be the time to find out.  This spring there are a variety of events providing the opportunity to celebrate the completion of the major races and also push ourselves in ways that typically don’t mesh with mid season training.   March 15th is the 4th Annual North Routt...

Tomorrow sees the final sprint of the season take place in the classic technique and the final opportunity for athletes to grab the maximum allotted points for a single race. For the races in Falun the point values will be cut in half due to the "min-t...
