Healthy and Fit, Goldsack Snags Double Victory in West

With temperatures in the single digits for the SuperTour-opening double sprint qualifier in West Yellowstone, it was all about staying warm on Thursday. But Drew Goldsack did better than that—he was on fire. Goldsack, racing for the Canadian National Team and the Alberta World Cup Academy, skied to convincing wins in both competitions, showing that he has returned to form after a down Olympic year recovering from injury. In the morning classic race, he won...

Brooks Dominates Thanksgiving Day Dual Sprint

A year ago, Holly Brooks (APUNSC) burst onto the SuperTour scene, finishing 1st, 2nd and 4th in the three West Yellowstone races, a performance that set her on the way to a spot on the 2010 Olympic Team. Twelve months later Brooks has gone from surprise to favorite, and lived up to expectations with dual victories in the SuperTour Sprint Showdown on Thanksgiving day in West Yellowstone. Brooks dominated the field on a frigid day,...

Happy Thanksgiving from the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo

November 24, 2010 Who says the sun doesn’t shine in the winter in northern Finland? Ahvo and Ritva Taipale are on the road to Kuusamo again for the Nordic Opening! The drive up to Kuusamo was one of the most scenic ever. We probably could have taken a few hundred post card pictures. The sun was shining, the sky was spotted with some wispy looking purple, white and pink clouds and the trees are covered...

Sprint Showdown Faces of the Day

Thanksgiving day featured the first double sprint qualifier in SuperTour history.  As is usually the case in West Yellowstone at this time of year, the races featured large fields – over 200 athletes took part in the class and skate sprint events. Cold temperatures and tough courses made for a challenging day and some memorable expressions…

The past couple weeks "on the road" have included racing, pig noses, deck jumping, and landing in nordic ski heaven. On the racing front, I want to start off by bragging about my talented teammates. On each of the race days I had something to be excited about, regardless of my own results, because it was inspiring to see the friends I've trained with all year kill it!Here's Kate Fitz, coach

The family traveled out  to West Yellowstone to celebrate Thanksgiving and cheer me on in the first races of the season.  Our Turkey Day races consisted of a  Classic sprint and a Skate sprint.  Looking forward to a great winter of racing!

Phil Widmer is no stranger to sprinting at the highest levels of skiing. At 28, the Canadian has started 17 World Cups, raced at two World Championships, and represented Canada at the Torino Olympics in 2006. Despite falling short of the Olympic team last year, Widmer dominated the North American sprint scene. He finished on the NorAm podium three times, and won a SuperTour sprint before opting for surgery at the end of February to...
