2010 December

Saturday was the first long mass start race of the World Cup season in La Clusaz, France, and along with mass start races come difficulties in measuring performance in a sensible manner.  The women’s field didn’t help matters by having the top three ski away from the field. So you end up with some odd [...] Related posts:How I Learned to Start Worrying and Hate the F-Factor (Part 1) How I Learned To Start Worrying and Hate the F-Factor (Part 2) Davos Recap: Distance

The December world cups drew to a close yesterday with the Mixed Relay in Pokljuka, Slovenia. In Saturday’s World Cup sprint race, Bjorn Ferry gave habitual powerhouse Sweden its third victory of the new season, and its first in a men’s race. On Sunday, Sweden took win number four. After Helena Ekholm and Anna Carin Zidek, the team’s first two World Cup victors this season, left the Swedes within striking distance of the podium, Carl Johann Bergman used some last-minute heroics to take a 0.3 second win over Ukraine France and...

With Win in Rossland, Kuhn Scores One for the Sprinters

One of the intentions of the tour format introduced to elite-level cross-country ski racing in the past few years is to allow sprinters and distance specialists to compete on a level playing field. That balance hasn’t been achieved yet at the World Cup level: None of the winners of the four editions of the Tour de Ski, men’s or women’s, have been pure sprinters. But in this weekend’s three-stage mini-tour held in Rossland, BC, organizers...

With Christmas just around a corner, I thought this might be just the time to share a little old school skiing of Billy Koch. I vividly remember watching this for the first time at my grade school friend's Scotty house. He'd commandeered a copy and fir...

At the end of World Cup period I, Norway sits on top of the Nation’s Cup standings, and in a shift from the recent past, it is the women leading the way. The 4x5km relay in La Clusaz demonstrated exactly how the Norwegians built their points lead, with four women putting on a virtual clinic on their way to a 56 second victory over Italy. Three of the four Norwegians posted the fasted times on...

It’s so crazy to be done with period one racing! After three days straight of waking up and racing, I woke up today expecting to get ready and race again. I was a little surprised at myself considering how tired I was before the race yesterday, but I think that’s a good thing because I am not sick of racing, and will be rip roarin’ ready for nationals. br/br/Yesterday was a mixed bag of results. Jessie Diggins pulled out some crazy classic skiing and blew both Holly Brooks and Sadie Bjornsen out of the water. Jessie had the fastest time of the day by over twenty seconds! APU girls still kicked butt though, with the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th fastest times of the day. Morgan Smyth’s time was 2nd, and Sadie’s was 3rd, And I was 5th. Holly was showing a little wear and tear from the weekend, but still had the 6th fastest time. So if it had been a 10k classic interval start race we would have essentially taken 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th places. However, our places in the overall mini-tour were not quite as good. The hot tub afterwards was quite good though!br/br/The boy’s race was much more pack-oriented than ours, and there was almost a ten person lead pack for most of it. Lars was hanging in there in second for most of it, but just wasn’t able to make the overspeed final kilometers to the finish. He wound up fourth overall.br/br/After packing and travel waxing up a storm last night, we left Rossland at 7am. Today is going to be an airport day, and I should be into Anchorage at around 8:15pm! Look out Alaska, here I come!

Remo Fischer used a strong attack late in the third leg of the men’s 4x10km relay in La Clusaz, France, to open up a gap on Russian Petr Sedov, and set up the first World Cup relay win for the Swiss men. Fischer’s move rested on the foundation built by teammate Dario Cologna. The former World Cup overall champion teamed with Alexander Legkov (RUS), the current World Cup leader, to break apart the usual early...

Ramsau 2

December 19, 2010

Today was the second day in Ramsau, Austria. Today made me realize things, and how hard work can really pay off and you can get the results easy when you put your mind to it! My brother Bryan got his career best, 8th place, in the Race today. He has worked his ass off all summer and fall to get in to good shape, to fight for points in every competition. He lost up to 20 pounds which puts hi [...]
