The official results show, however, that Italy won the men's relay ahead of Norway's first team which had a set-up consisting of Odd-Bjœrn Hjelmset, Frode Estil, Kristen Skjeldal, and Espen Bjervig.
But, both teams were beaten by Norway's second team which consisted of Anders Aukland, Tore Bjoneviken, Tor Arne Hetland, and Thomas Alsgaard.

The Norwegian first team controlled the women's relay from start to finish. Russia finished second and Germany third. Norway's victorious quartet consisted of Vibeke Skofterud, Bente Skari, Hilde G. Pedersen, and Maj Helen Sorkmo.
Marit Bjœrgen showed impressive form on the first leg for Norway's second team. After a conservative start, she overtook all of her opponents in the latter part of the first leg.
