We hooked up with US Ski Team Development Team coach Chris Grover and Head coach Trond Nystad for some comments following their Tuesday September 23rd running time-trial at Soldier Hollow:
“The trail was in good shape after having just been mowed, the weather was perfect — warm and sunny — in other words ideal for a time-trial. The athletes running shape was a little rusty after not having done running intervals for about five weeks. On-snow quality training was the main focus at the recentNew Zealand on-snow camp and hillbounding/moose-hufs, rollerski and ski walking in the period following that camp. Carl Swenson has just returned from mountain bike racingâ€
Marathon skier Scott Loomis blasted through the men’s 10K time-trial — winning with a new course record time of 37.11 — setting a PR by 1 minute and 25 seconds! The old record was held by Kris Freeman in 37.40.
Justin Freeman also snuck under the old record in 37.37 and made 48 seconds improvement.
Loomis win was no big surprise after recently winning the prestigious Snowbird Hill- Climb by a large margin.
Aubrey Smith of the US Development Team posted the fastest time in the women’s 5K time-trial – cutting 11 seconds off her PR despite loosing a few seconds due to a “wrong- turnâ€.
TheUS women are using the same course as the Canadian team (see results article earlier in the week) but adding about 1 minute and 30 seconds in the stadium area.
Wendy Wagner and several development team members (not in town) did not participate.
The team’s next time-trial is in one week — this time a 10K skate rolleski test for the men and a 5K for the women. The Soldier Hollow rollerski course will be the venue.
Another running time-trial is scheduled at the end of the dryland camp — before the departure to the on-snow training camp inFairbanks, Alaska.
