RacingWorld CupAukland And Paruzzi On Top In Marcialonga

The Marcialonga 70 kilometer classic Marathon race took place on Sunday, January 25th. The event was part of both the regular World Cup and the FIS Marathon Cup. This made for interesting duels between the best classic World Cup skiers and marathon specialists. The big question was in other words if the World Cup skiers could beat the double pole specialist? The answer was yes, but only by a hair.

Rollerski double poling paid off for Aukland

The race was decided up the last three kilometer long uphill before the finish. The previous 55 kilometer had been double poling! The sun had warmed up the last uphill making everyone’s kick marginal. Anders Aukland reached the hill in the lead along with De Centa.

Jorgen Aukland was 30 seconds behind. Anders Aukland passed De Centa one kilometer up the hill and the Italian stopped for 25-30 seconds to apply more kick wax. Anders was at this point double poling as fast as tired arms could handle. It then looked like De Centa had succeeded in applying better grip as he was starting to close the gap on Aukland. But no, the distance “stabilized”- Anders was fighting like crazy on skis with no kick, turning occasionally to see if the Italian was getting closer. He turned one final time on the finish stretch and realized that was going to win and capture 100 valuable World Cup points. DeCenta came in 20 seconds behind while Jorgen Aukland in third was 42 seconds behind – after more than 3 hours of (mostly) double poling.

Carl Swenson was the best North American with a strong 13th place (+3.09), Kris Freeman was 25th (+5.43.

Italian Gabriella Paruzzie won the women’s race (by more than 2 minutes) ahead of Valentina Schevchenko of Ukraine and Manuella Henkel of Germany (+4.16). Canadian Sarah Renner captured a strong 8th (+9.10), Unni Odegaards came in 15th (+19.25), and US Ski Team’s Wendy Wagner came in 19th place (+31.51).
