Yes, it's like doing the American Birkebeiner on a mtn bike. Â Not just any bike, I choose a bike built for two or tandem. Â The Chequamegon Fat Tire 40 is a 40 mile mtn bike race from Hayward to Cable , WI. Â It uses some of the famed Birkie trail along with multiple fire roads to make up the largest off road bike race in the country with about 2500 riders.
Finishing at Telemark
The 2004 “Chequamie” was not too much different that other years. Â Big rains the week before, which can be typical, made for a slow and challenging course. Â Muddy courses can be hard on a tandem taking a toll on the drivetrain. Â We felt fortunate to only have a minor timing chain issue early in the race.
The heat was on, literally, with temps pushing 80 degrees. Â It turned out to the undoing of many riders, including myself. Â Leg cramping with about 10 miles made for tough finish. Â We did though it though, finishing 2nd. Â Even though we were down a little in the overall compared to other years we were happy to be on the podium. Â Not too bad considering it was our first time back in two years with only two rides together before race day.
