Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten reports that a cross country “Tour de Ski†similar to Tour de France is a possibility in a few years.
A proposal for a stage-series for cross country skiers using ideas from Tour de France was made by Norwegian cross country skiers this spring. It can now become a reality.
Stage race cross country skiing made its first appearance in the United States at the 2004 Spring Series in Colorado ( www.springseries.com ). In the week-long, seven race series an overall title was awarded to the skier who competed in all events with the lowest combined time. Feedback to the spring series format was very positive.
FIS is at the moment exploring the possibilities to see if this is feasible to organize successfully on World Cup level.
– We would in the start-phase race different distances for one week, said FIS secretary general Sarah Lewis to Aftenposten.
A decision regarding this can be made next week.
