Hermod Hill Makes The Difference For Konrad

FasterSkierDecember 19, 2004

Sarah Konrad had a dominating performance in Saturday's 10 K free technique SuperTour race at Soldier Hollow. She won by almost 50 seconds over Rebecca Dussault, while Kikkan Randall was third, almost two minutes behind.

The key to Sarah's victory can be seen in the special “Hermod Hill Splits” on the results in this link:
Hermod Hill Split Time Results

Ernie Page of Summit Systems Timing and his crew at Soldier Hollow were taking splits at the bottom and top of the famous Hermod Hill, thus allowing us to see who was fastest from bottom to top. A quick glance at those result shows that Konrad dominated the hill, skiing approximately 10 seconds faster than her closest competition each time up the ascent. She obviously also skied faster on the rest of the course, but chances are good that you will win when you put 10 seconds on the field in one hill (twice).

Hermod Hill is arguably the hardest climb at Soldier Hollow. The sustained climb lasts over a minute and a half for even the best competitors and it comes about a kilometer from the lap/finish area.
