John Bauer (35) has more US National Championship titles than most people, but Americans might remember him best from the 2002 Olympics at Soldier Hollow where he skied the US team into 4th place in the opening leg of the 4 x 10-kilometer relay. It’s exciting to hear from John that he is not only back in Utah to ski the 2005 US Nationals, but also is aiming for the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.
I met John on Sunday January 2 at Soldier Hollow, the day before the first race at the 2005 US Nationals. He was out training, testing skis and getting ready for Monday’s 30-kilometer skate race:
. I’m entered to ski all the races, but need to change my plane ticked if I’m going to do the last race, the 15 + 15- kilometer pursuit/duathlon. I’m using what I learned training in the years prior to the 2002 Olympics to gradually get back and most of all ready for next year. I want to be on next years Olympic team, ski in the relay and win a medal. My training is solid, but also includes pushing the baby-jogger with our 14-month old daughter.

Give us an idea of how you trained prior to the 2002 Olympics and how you are planning on training for the 2006 Olympics?
-A normal (solid) training week for me included (and will include) the following:
Monday: off
Tuesday: Two workouts (intervals in the morning)
Wednesday: Two workouts
Thursday: One workout
Friday: One workout
Saturday: Two workouts for a total of six hours (intervals an option for morning session)
Sunday: Two workouts for a total of six hours.

John, that’s pretty tough schedule. How many weekly interval sessions did this include and what was your highest weeks?
– I did 1-3 weekly interval sessions and had high weeks of 29 hours.
