Jorgen Aukland has been one of the dominating skiers in international long distance skiing for several years. A main reason for this is his extreme double pole skills. Most European TV-viewers still remember how he and his brother Anders successfully double poled up the last long and hard hill at the end of the Marcialonga a couple years ago.</p>
<p>Double poling is probably the part of the classic technique that has developed most the last couple years and Jorgen has been part of leading the development. But, as usual in sport, it’s the desire to become better that’s the athlete’s motivation. Jorgen Aukland is no exception. He has in order to become even better in double poling gathered knowledge from the other extreme part of cross country skiing, the sprint. </p>
<p>– I want to develop my technique and skills further and am finding new ideas and methods by watching and talking to the sprinters. You can see when you watch them on television like in the Drammen World Cup that they are exceptionally good at double poling, something I can learn from says Jorgen which have talked to Jens Arne Svartedal and Tor Arne Hetland regarding how they are training. </p>
<p>– I have got ideas for adjustments that can be made in my strength/weight training and double pole intervals. I’m for example looking into what type (length, intensity and number of reps) of intervals they find to work the best.</p>
<p> Double poling is Jorgen’s strength, but he also wants to become even better in the hardest sections of the courses. He is along with the team’s new coach Pal Gunnar Mikkelsplass, developing the plan for how to achieve that.</p>
<p>– Our main goal besides developing the poling is to increase my (maximal oxygen) capacity. It’s exciting having Pal Gunnar as coach. It has helped me in making my training more systematic. I’m now thinking more about what’s best for me, instead of just joining others in their workouts.</p>
<p>What’s the main difference from the past?</p>
<p>– I’m using more periodization by separating more between hard and easy periods, says Jorgen that besides a pulled quadriceps muscle that has caused him some problems, have trained well since May.</p>
