Skiing at Sunshine!
The pictures below provide a pretty good idea of what kind of treasure was found by some at Sunshine Ski Village in Banff, Alberta on Saturday October 22. Arrangements were made for a group of Canmore based skiers to get in some early season skiing on a beautiful and crisp morning in the Rockies. Members of Rocky Mountain Racers, Exel Racing Team, X-C.Com and XC Ottawa as well as a few others were lucky enough to take part.
Special thanks must be made to Sunshine Ski Village for making what might ordinarily seem impossible possible. Skiers were taken by bus from the Sunshine base parking lot to Sunshine Village. From here, we skied to a plateau where a very challenging 3-4 km loop was very nicely groomed. The terrain, combined with some significant elevation (roughly 2300m) made for a rather taxing day. Nobody was complaining mind you. As you can see, the weather was perfect and the scenery was spectacular.
So far, skiing at lower elevations in the Bow Valley has been only possible for a very brief period of time at a few select locations following some recent dustings. The snow situation at Sunshine, however, looks very stable and it is rumoured that more people might be able to take advantage of it in the coming weeks.
