Western State College Nordic Ski Team Holds Practice on Snow

FasterSkierOctober 18, 2005

Cory,
We got on snow this weekend at the Breckenridge Nordic Center. I had about half a dozen of my Western State Skiers up there. It was Great Mid October Skiing. I attached a handful of pictures from Saturday, the 15th. They're zipped for easy attachment. They're nice and small, about 200kb each. It would be great if you could share this with the Fasterskier World.

Thanks

October 14-15, 2005 Breckenridge Nordic Center, Brecenridge, CO.

This weekend was fall break at Western State College in Gunnison, CO. A few of the Nordic Skiers were visiting family around the country and a few more were training in Gunnison. The rest couldn't resist some tempting news from just to our north-east. With the big snow (about 30 inches) in Summit County Colorado last weekend, we decided to take the 2 hour drive from Gunnison up to Summit County for some early season on snow practice. I had a long pole hike scheduled for Saturday, and the team was more than willing to head up the road for some real skiing.

We arrived at the Breckenridge Nordic Center at about 4:30 on Friday afternoon and went out for a quick skate just to get a little taste of the snow. The bright Rocky Mountain sun had claimed a lot of the snow, but Nordic Center Managers Gene and Therese Dayton had done a great job at grooming the snow so that it was firm in most places and they still had good coverage over about 2 km of easier terrain. Perfect for the first ski of the year! We skated for about 45 minutes and then headed back to Frisco for dinner as Gene headed out with the Power Tiller to buff out the trails and send some new classic tracks for the morning.

Saturday morning was clear and crisp. We got onto the snow at about 9 am. Everything had firmed up over night and the trails were in great shape. There were some thin spots, but we could make almost a 10 minute loop by winding through the wooded trails around the warming house. We skated for about an hour and 15 minutes and then got out our classical skis. The snow that had been tilled up the night before was actually quite powdery. Half of the team used no-wax rentals from the Nordic Center and the other half of us went on Rode Red and Yellow mixed. It kicked well and we classical skied for about 45 minutes. It was a great morning of skiing and everyone was super excited to be on snow in Mid-October.
