Borlange, Sweden–Freestyle Sprint:

Canadian Devon Kershaw followed up on a promising 4th-place prelim rank by rocketing through his heats all the way to the A final where he faced three Swedes: perennial Dusseldorf World Cup sprint winner Peter Larsson, 2003 World Sprint Champion Thobias Fredriksson, and recent Olympic Gold Medalist in the sprint and overall World Cup sprint leader Bjoern Lind.

Kershaw's semifinal was hardly any easier, with among others two of the most successful sprinters ever: Norwegian Tor Arne Hetland (many-time World Cup winner, World Championship gold medalist Olympic Champion) and Italy's Christian Zorzi (about the same). The young Canadian relegated both of them to the B-Final.

Also in the heats was US sprint specialist Andrew Newell, who missed advancing from his quarterfinal by a hair in a three-way photo finish to end up 13th overall. Chris Cook and Torin Koos missed the heats by less than a second.

The sprinters will be racing again already on Thursday in downtown Drammen, Norway, while tomorrow's races in Falun, Sweden will see a return to action for the rest of the distance racers.
