Denver University (DU) and the University of Colorado (CU) used strong performances by their cross country skiers to move into first and second place in the team competition at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on Thursday.
Denver University men's cross country team placed all three of its skiers in the top ten, led by John Stene who won the race by 13 seconds over Marius Korthauer of University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). Bryan Cook (Northern Michigan University – NMU) was the top American in the race, earning third place.
Colorado (CU) is right behind DU in the overall standings thanks to a win by their women's cross country team. CU's Jana Rehemaa won the women's 5K classic by seven seconds over her teammate, Maria Grevsgaard. Two-time Olympian Lindsey Weier of NMU placed third and was the top American.
Colorado was the strongest combined (men & women) nordic team on the day, earning 198 points. DU was second with 178 points, and Dartmouth College was third with 134.5 points. In the overall (alpine and nordic, men and women) DU has a 30 point lead over CU, while the University of New Mexico (UNM) is third.
On Friday the alpine skiers will race slalom, and on Saturday the NCAA championships will wrap up with the cross country free technique races.
