Øystein Pettersen wants to focus 100% toward the Düsseldorf sprint World Cup opener later this month after he was selected to represent the Norwegian team.
He has therefore decided not to follow his Manpower (elite skiers not on the national team) teammate’s altitude training. He is instead training hard and intensive on his own.

– I know from experience that high altitude training is not good for my race shape. I’m in need for hard training and that doesn’t unite with altitude training, says Pettersen

3 hour on the glacier

He is afraid of â€burning up†and not be able to get back in shape before after Christmas if he had done most of his training at high altitude.

– Everything I’m doing is with Düsseldorf in mind, he says.

Pettersen is doing some on-snow ski workouts on the glacier, but never more than 3 hours in a day.

– It’s a bit lonely to live low on my own, but I believe that that’s what’s needed, and fortunately I have the support of my teammates to do this. The team is very vulnerable since it’s only five of us, says Pettersen.

Hopes to ski the relay

Pettersen wants to be a factor in Dusseldorf. His best World Cup result is an eight place. He is convinced that he can copy or even improve that on a good day

– To do that I need to reach the semifinal, and anything can happen when you are there, underlines Pettersen.

He believes that he might be given a chance to ski the relay on Sunday if he performs in the individual race.

– It would be incredibly exciting if I qualified for that, says Pettersen.
