Utah's Sletten and CXC's Valaas Win SuperTour Opener

The University of Utah's Even Sletten and Team CXC's Laura Valaas were the season's first SuperTour winners, each taking a victory in Friday's individual free technique sprint in West Yellowstone, Montana.

Sletten earned a narrow victory over Lars Flora (Subaru Factory Team). Colin Mahood (XC Oregon/Rossignol) was third and 'retired' Carl Swenson (Subaru Factory Team) was fourth. Anders Haugen, who was first in the qualifying round, finished 8th.

In the women's event, Valaas finished third in the qualifying, then won each of her heats enroute to victory. Karin Camenisch (Rossignol/BSF), who won the qualifying round, was second, Caitlin Compton (CXC) was third, and Martina Stursova (Rossignol) was fourth.

The SuperTour continues on Saturday with an individual start classic race.
