2007 November

The 2007-2008 SuperTour season began under cold sunny skies in West Yellowstone, Montana. Last year's women's SuperTour Sprint Champion Laura Valaas picked up where she left off, narrowly edging Switzerland's Karin Camenisch in a photo finish. On the men's side, CXC's Garrott Kuzzy skied a tactical final and used a blistering finish to take the top spot. Valaas and Camenisch posted the top times in the qualifying round, with Camenisch earning the poll position. Both...

In August of this year, Julia Tchepalova denied a rumor regarding her switch to biathlon. Her partner, Vassili Rotchev, confirmed that Julia would continue her cross-country skiing career. What about the saying “in every rumor there is a little bit of truth”? According to latest news reports, Tchepalova has been practicing shooting for the last couple of months and participated in her first biathlon test-race last weekend. Jens Arne Svartedal came home from Düsseldorf with a very disappointing 55th place finish. Last year’s sprint world champion isn’t letting that affect his training plans leading up to the first World Cup distance races at Beitostœlen, Norway. “My plan is to continue with a lot of base training and to keep the pressure on. I am not planning to let up prior to the Beitostœlen races. Even though I did well there last year,...

I arrived Sunday night. I skied in the morning on the upper trails at SilverStar and in the afternoon on Sovereign Lake trails. There's enough snow at both, and it's skiing on all the normal trails. Coverage is quite good. I'm still using rock skis, but many local skiers are on good skis. Grooming is more extensive and simply better at Sovereign Lake, but there's nothing to complain about at either location (they're about 5km...

The 2007 Wooden Ski Classic was held at Russian Jack Park again this year, with the usual fine snow and lots of crazy people dressed in old style wool and woodies duking it out with the clock turned back 30+ years. The race is an annual fundraiser for the UAA Nordic Ski Team and the Sons of Norway. All photo credits: Raphael Wunderle

The first domestic cross-country ski race of the season took place this past weekend at Birch Hill in Fairbanks, Alaska. Editor's Note: I skied on the plateau this afternoon. It was fairly thin leaving the parking area, but conditions improved higher up. Overall the skiing is quite good considering the weather. Rock skis are necessary, but a few more inches and colder temperatures should lead to solid conditions. Here is the situation as of 5:00 PM, Sunday, November 18: There is still no significant snow on the Rendezvous Ski Trails but the forecast looks better...

Bolton Valley, Vermont received 6″-8″ of nice snow Thursday and Friday. It was enough to get the snowmobile and small pull-behind-groomer out and do some packing. This made for both great skate and classic skiing. Broadway is the prefect place for early season no pole practice and distance skiing. There were some high school racers and college skiers out there today doing classic technique. For more early snow images from Bolton Valley visit, http://boltonnordic.wordpress.com
