LAKE PLACID — Dartmouth jumped to an early lead Friday at the St. Lawrence University Carnival, thanks to three first place finishes in four races.

Dartmouth nordic skiers continued their dominance Friday, winning the women’s team score and tying Middlebury for the leading men’s team score. Dartmouth also topped both individual podiums. Junior Glenn Randall edged out first-year Patrick Johnson of Middlebury in the men’s 10 kilometer freestyle race while senior Nick Kline of Colby skied to an impressive third place.

Dartmouth and Middlebury men currently stand tied for the lead in team points, and ahead of Colby, who placed third.

In the women’s 5 kilometer freestyle, Dartmouth first-year Rosie Brennan outpaced her team mate, first-year Ida Sargent, for the win. Middlebury first year Alexa Turzian finished third. Two top-three finishes by Dartmouth women cemented their lead over Middlebury and UNH in team standings after one day of racing.

At a snowy Whiteface Mountain, it was the University of Vermont who won both the men’s and women’s team scores. Catamount men currently stand ahead of Dartmouth and the University of New Hampshire, while the women outscored Middlebury and Dartmouth in team points.

An impressive two second win by Dartmouth first-year Courtney Hammond in the giant slalom event helped keep her team in the top three. First-year Lyndee Janowiak of the University of Vermont was the runner-up, with senior Megan Hughes of Middlebury placing third.

Willams College senior Charles Christianson prevailed in the men’s giant slalom event, with a total time nearly a full second faster than runner-up, junior Sean McNamara of UNH. Junior Andrew Wagner of Middlebury rounded out Friday’s top three.

Racing continues Saturday in Lake Placid with the nordic distance races and alpine slalom events.
