The Western REG camp wrapped up this weekend after a great week of training in Park City, UT. Forty-three athletes selected from Intermountain, PNSA, High Plains, Far West and Rocky Mountain got in some big volume (17-22 hrs for the week), but also two quality intensity sessions, a couple strength workouts and a lot of roller ski technique work out at Soldier Hollow. Agony Hill Time Trial served as the second of two intensity workouts. It consists of roughly a 1500′ vertical run/speed hike up a ridgeline just north of the University of Utah. The weather was ideal for Salt Lake City with early morning temperatures in the 70’s and pretty good air quality. The junior athletes threw down some great times, despite the big week of training. While only one male athlete recorded a time under 16 minutes four years ago at this same camp (Glen Randall 14:49), this year six boys broke 16 minutes! It was a similar situation for the girls. In 2004 three girls posted sub 20 minute times, and this year there were six. It was great to see that these athletes are raising the bar, and as a group coming into this camp more fit. For the boys, Alex Taylor (Far West/Williams College) posted the top time of the day in 14:45 and the third fastest time ever run by a junior. Female honors went to Mali Noyes (SVSEF) with a time of 19:14. Morgan Arritola’s blazing fast time of 16:55 in 2004 still stands as the female junior record. It’s believed that the junior men’s record time is held by Rob Whitney who once ran under 14 minutes.
After Agony Hill TT, it was time to have some fun so we headed to Raging Waters Water Park for the afternoon and used our competitive spirit in seeing who could catch the most air on the steep ski jump type slides. Pictured below, you’ll see Ben Husaby really laying it out there for some big air. The final workout on Saturday consisted of a great OD run along the Mid-Mountain trail from the Canyons to Park City.
